On the 17th Instant, I also brought the question to the notice of the Executive Council, and the members agreed, after satisfying themselves that the statements contained in the Petition are generally correct, that it was a subject fitting to be brought before Your Lordship.
At present, by Ordinance No 5 of 1845, each Auctioneer pays Annually for his License, 50 Dollars, and two and a half per Cent on the amount of his Sales. The Revenue derived from this source has been: in 1846, $720; in 1847, $255.6.8; and for the past half year, it has been paid in, $145.16.52.
The Books and Accounts of the Auctioneers have been repeatedly examined, as authorized by Ordinance, and I am informed by the Colonial Secretary, under whose directions that Inspection was conducted, that the proper dues had been duly paid into the Treasury.
